Working with the Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU) and the Cabbagetown Neighborhood Improvement Association (CNIA), the Atlanta Services Group (ASG) Team has endeavored to find solutions to the transportation challenges that are respectful of the neighborhood’s context. Our most important goal was to assure that the solutions developed were neighborhood-driven and consensus-based. Solutions with these characteristics have a much greater chance of being implemented and appreciated by local residents.
This goal of the Cabbagetown Neighborhood Traffic Study is to provide recommendations on how to improve traffic (both vehicular and pedestrian) and parking in the neighborhood and the surrounding area. From the beginning, however, it was emphasized that any solutions developed should have neighborhood support and be sensitive to the historic and aesthetic context of the neighborhood. The solutions developed should build on the success of planning and urban design initiatives that have been undertaken in the area over the years. These earlier efforts focused on general improvements in the neighborhood; whereas, this study is focused on what transportation improvements might solve existing and anticipated problems while supporting earlier initiatives.
The overall process included several neighborhood workshops, a study of the physical area and a technical anaylasis. The resulting recommendations address traffic speed, parking, one-way streets, pedistrain safety and future needs. It is up to the residents to see that the recommendations are implementated.
