Monthly meetings are held at the community center at 177 Estoria Street, on the second Tuesday of the month at 7PM. All are welcome to attend. Cabbagetown is a historic neighborhood located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Cabbagetown developed around the Fulton Cotton and Bag Mill and has a strong Appalachian heritage. During the 80's and 90's Cabbagetown became home to many artists and musicians. During the 90's Cabbagetown, along with the rest of in-town Atlanta, experienced a re-newed interest in in-town living and restoration of the older homes. Today Cabbagetown is home to a wonderful mix of families, singles, young couples, artists, corporate executives, independent businesses, and several churches - all within a six block area.

Cabbagetown Initiative announces the availability of relief funds for Cabbagetown residents affected in the March 2008 storms and tornadoes.

 ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A trail of uprooted and broken trees, downed utility lines, peeled-off roofs and collapsed brick walls marked the path of a tornado that tore through downtown Atlanta.
The National Weather Service confirmed late Saturday morning that an EF-2 tornado with winds up to 130 mph struck the city Friday night.
Trees blown down in Friday night's storm crushed a row of houses in the city's historic Cabbagetown district just east of downtown. Cabbagetown was among the hardest-hit communities. When daylight broke Saturday, residents woke up, looked around at the damage and were in shock.
Initial estimates from the mayor's office said at least 20 of the historic homes were damaged or destroyed by the tornado.
Atlanta police Maj. Renee Propes urged people to stay away from Cabbagetown.
"We appreciate the fact that people may want to help," Propes said. "But, in most instances, they are hindering our efforts and possibly putting people and property at risk."
The top floor collapsed at one building in the Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts, a 104-year-old industrial complex redeveloped into residences. Police officials said everyone was out of the structure and surrounding buildings and all residents in the lofts had been accounted for.
As of 11 a.m. Saturday, about 10,000 customers were without power, but restoring it in some areas will be "very slow going," said Georgia Power spokesman John Sell.

| | The green walls look much worse than the ugliest of tags that were on the retaining wall. It's all I have to look at out my front door, and it's utterly disgusting.
I understand the problems with graffiti on homes and businesses, but I'm appalled that the members of this neighborhood have decided to destroy so much art. Is the wall public domain? If so, there was no reason to paint over it. Or is property of the train yard? If this is the case, painting it pea green is vandalism just the same as tagging.
The support I see being provided to a violent man who decided to take justice over graffiti on the wall into his own hands by my neighbors sickens me.
I'm very sad to live in Cabbagetown right now. Perhaps our neighborhood association should focus on the problems caused by violent crime rather than art on a retaining wall that harmed no one. | | I was shocked as well. These murals were amazing and they added so much personality compared to the green "half walls" that look like crap. I know that there was some graffiti that was offensive but to destroy it all... boo! I believe we live in a neighborhood that has a voting process as to how CabbageTown should be run. To impose your non-artistic beliefs on everyone else is appalling... What's next should we cover up our tattoos, burn some books, or maybe just throw out everyone that owns a spray can. Big ups to Tulane University for sending it's alternative Spring Break kids to Cabbagetown. A heartfelt thanks to the surrounding neighborhoods for sending all these good folks to help us clean up our neighborhood. There are so many people that deserve a beer on us Cabbageheads. Now that we've got momentum, let's keep the cleanup efforts going! Let's scrub the tags from the walls and signs. Let's pester the city for more street lights. Let's mount cameras on our houses and post signage letting the monthly robbing crew that they're being recorded!!! I listened to the new CD by Shawn Mullins and on it a great song called "Cabbagetown". This song is about your town! I did a bit of internet research and was shocked to see the devastation caused. I thought I would leave this note to let you all know that folks "across the pond" in Scotland ( United Kingdom) are thinking about you and hoping everything works out. |
